Abstract
These days, apartment houses are increasing with concentration of population in metropolitan area of Korea. A housewife at home is in a specific position as mother and wife. We studied this subject to provide data for the development of oral health educational program . about housewives. A survey with a questionnaire was conducted among housewives at apartment houses in Pusan.. All of subjects were married women as 313 from twenties to sixties. This study assessed their tooth brushing, selection of toothbrush and dentifrice, use of fluoride dentifrice, preventive oral treatments and oral prophylaxis at dental clinics by their age, education level and .monthly income.
The mean tooth brushing frequency per day was 2.5. The tooth brushing frequency per day showed statistically the significant relation with education level(P<0.01). 50.0% of. respondents were dependent on the advertisement of the company for the selection of toothbrush or dentifrice. For prevention of dental caries at home, the housewives entirely depended on tooth brushing. Only 20.0% of respondents accepted the preventive care in dental clinic. 91.6% of respondents were aware of caries prevention effect of fluoride. 61.2% of respondents were judged to use fluoride-containing dentifrice by the. brand which they, wrote down on the questionnaire. 56.6% of respondents experienced oral prophylaxis at dental clinics. These were statistically significant relations with education level(P<0.05).
We can presume that the housewives at apartment houses are not provided with precise knowledge about oral health, and the reconsideration of community dentist´s role should be required.
